How to use the 2026 Ohio school district tax calculator
Ohio school district income tax is based on where you live, not where you work. It is separate from Ohio state income tax and municipal income tax. Start with your physical home address because school district boundaries do not necessarily follow postal cities, ZIP codes or municipal boundaries.
Ohio school district tax changes for 2026
The Ohio Department of Taxation's March 2026 update identifies six new taxing districts, two expired districts and three rate changes. The calculator's 214-district list reflects the full official 2026 rate tables, not a prior-year list.
| Change | Districts | 2026 treatment |
|---|---|---|
| New | Trimble, Clinton-Massie, Westerville, Findlay, Tiffin and Kings | All six use the earned-income-only tax base |
| Expired | East Palestine and Edon-Northwest | 0.00%; omitted from the active taxing-district selector |
| Rate change | Coldwater, Milton-Union and Bowling Green | 1.00%, 2.00% and 1.25%, respectively |
Traditional vs. earned-income-only tax base
Traditional tax-base districts use modified adjusted gross income less exemptions. This base can include more than wages, so copying annual salary into the calculator may understate tax for a household with other taxable income.
Earned-income-only districts use earned income. Investment income, pensions and other unearned amounts are generally outside that alternative base, but taxpayers should use the current SD 100 instructions to determine the exact amount.
The selected district automatically changes the field label and explanation. This page intentionally asks for the applicable tax base instead of pretending gross salary is correct for both systems.
When estimated payments may matter
Ohio's 2026 SD 100ES instructions say estimated payments generally should be considered when projected school district liability, after credits and withholding, is more than $500. The official worksheet also compares current-year liability with prior-year liability and applies a 90% test, so the alert here is a planning signal rather than an official installment calculation.
The age-65 checkbox applies the worksheet's $50 credit when the taxpayer or spouse will be 65 or older during 2026, capped so the estimate never goes below zero.
Combine school district tax with full take-home pay
Use the main paycheck calculator to estimate federal income tax, Ohio state tax, Social Security, Medicare, city tax, school district tax and deductions together. This district page is the more precise place to identify the rate and tax-base type first.

Ohio school district tax FAQ
Do I owe school district income tax if my employer does not withhold it?
Possibly. Withholding does not determine whether the tax applies. Residents of a taxing school district generally must file the school district return, and under-withholding can create an amount due.
Why is my city not in the district list?
The selector contains only school districts with an income tax for 2026. A city name is also not the same thing as a school district name. Verify the physical address in The Finder; if the returned rate is 0.00%, a school district income tax return generally is not required.
Is the four-digit code the same as the Department of Education number?
No. Use the four-digit Ohio taxation school district number for filing and withholding, not the separate Department of Education number.
Does school district tax replace Ohio city tax?
No. They are separate local taxes. A resident can have school district tax and municipal tax in addition to Ohio state income tax.
